Rhodes to probe rape claims
RHODES University yesterday confirmed it was investigating social media allegations of a rape on campus.
According to a statement posted on the university’s student representative council (SRC) Facebook page yesterday, the rape occurred on Sunday night on campus.
Further details are unknown. University spokeswoman Veliswa Mhlope said in an internal statement that none of the students who provided written reports could give a clear account of what happened. “What we know at this stage is that both individuals who were involved disappeared immediately following the incident.
“The university is calling on anyone with information which could assist in the investigation to come forward.
“Confidentiality and optimal professional support is guaranteed to anyone who can assist the investigation,” said Mhlope.
The recent incident has once again put a spotlight on allegations of a rape culture at the university.
Mhlope said after the posts made on social media about the alleged incident, the campus protection unit (CPU) undertook a preliminary investigation and received statements from several students who heard strange noises coming from outside their residence.
At the time of issuing the statement, yesterday afternoon, the university indicated that no incident had been formally reported.
“At this stage, no report has been lodged with the after-hours line, student counselling unit, the office of the vice-chancellor, campus protection unit, division of student affairs, Grahamstown Settlers’ Hospital, or the South African Police Services (SAPS).”
The Rhodes VC, Dr Sizwe Mabizela, said the university viewed the allegation in a very serious light.
“We take any allegation of sexual and gender-based violence seriously.
“I urge any person who falls victim to such violence to report it immediately, so that we can provide them with support and ensure the alleged perpetrator can be dealt with appropriately,” said Mabizela.
In 2016 the university lodged an urgent independent investigation into allegations of 22 rapes and sexual assaults on campus.
