Codes out to win that glorious ticket for the Games after Mayor’s Cup ties

FOUR table tennis teams will meet each other at this year’s Mayor’s Cup set to be staged at Gompo Hall in East London on Saturday.

The tournament, which will see four other sporting codes – soccer, rugby Sevens, boxing and volleyball – being played at the Buffalo City Stadium, with the fifth code – goal ball – being staged at the Gompo Hall, will see the best players in the municipality getting a ticket to participate in the prestigious Steve Vukile Tshwete Games in November.

This past weekend scouts were wrapping up the selection process in boxing, soccer and table tennis, and president of the BCM Table Tennis Union, Nigel Adams said they managed to select four teams – King William’s Town, Mdantsane, Duncan Village/Pefferville and East London City Centre.

“We have U19 teams of boys and girls, and they will meet at the tournament, and we will have an overall winner.

“We are also using this tournament to select our BCM team for the Steve Vukile Tshwete Games (SVT Games).

“A team of six boys and six girls that will be selected on Saturday will be our team at the SVT Games,” said Adams.

“Last year King William’s Town were the champions. Then we had our boys and girls winners as well, and there’s a flouting trophy for the overall winners.”

Adams said they were able to prepare the teams regardless of the circumstances they have to play under.

“There are many challenges that have been confronting the sport for many years.

“We need a venue to play this sport, even if it’s a community hall that can be made available for us at certain times during the week so we can practice.

He added: “Because we don’t have the venue to call home as the table tennis community, we have to rely a lot on school venues.

“And all the teams have improved drastically over the past year,” said Adams.
