All-action fare on the cards at the Cambridge winter festival show

-

EXCITING school sport action is on the cards over the next three days as Cambridge High School hosts its eighth biennial Co-Educational Winter Sports Festival from today.

Top-class school sporting action will be on show from early this morning until Monday afternoon.

The festival will be for schools’ First Teams, and will include rugby, boys’ hockey, girls’ hockey and netball.

It will involve approximately 900 players and staff from the various participating schools. While all sporting encounters take place at Cambridge High, visiting teams will be staying at various accommodation establishments in and around East London. Rugby matches will be played today and on Monday starting at 9am, while hockey got under way yesterday afternoon in order to allow for more matches to take place on the Cambridge High School Astro Hockey surface. To ensure that hardly any matches take place on grass over the weekend the Selborne College astro will also be utilised for matches today. Netball will be played from today through to Monday. A comprehensive programme will be available for sale at the gate.

The purpose of the Festival is not necessarily competition, but is an opportunity for players and staff from various schools around South Africa to interact on a sporting and a social level. This becomes a further opportunity to enhance the education of the children.

Schools participating are largely from the Eastern and Western Cape.

A number of businesses have contributed in no small measure towards the overall organisation of the festival according to Cambridge head of sport Tim Stirk, adding that the most notable – without whom the festival could not take place – are the two main sponsors: Spar Eastern Cape and Caltex East Cape Marketers. “At Caltex Eastern Cape Marketer, we focus our community investment efforts on creating opportunities for building future leaders through education and sport. For us it is more than just being one of the top fuel providers in the Eastern Cape but also about forming meaningful relationships with people that we believe share our ethos of adding value, uplift and nurture,” said Clive Berlyn, Caltex Eastern Cape Marketer CEO.

Berlyn congratulated sponsors and organisers for making the Cambridge High School festival a highlight on the high school sporting calendar for the past 14 years.

“We are proud to have been associated with this event since 2006, as events like these plays not only a major unifying role in our community but will produce the future leaders critically to take our country forward,” said Berlyn.
