‘Nomeva’ puzzled by reports of possible Komanisi bout

- By MESULI ZIFO

XOLISANI “Nomeva” Ndongeni has reacted with surprise at the news that he is scheduled to face Lusanda Komanisi in a Golden Gloves Promotion show.

This after the boxing promotional powerhouse released a statement on its website mulling over the possible clash with GGP boss quoted as saying the fight was being discussed.

Both boxers hail from East London although Ndongeni originally hails from KwaBhaca.

Komanisi has just joined GGP and he is already scheduled to see action in their September 1 show in his lightweight debut.

He is the former SA and IBO world featherweight champion and his teaming up with GGP was not without any controversy after his previous promoter Xaba Promotions vowed to challenge the move in court.

And like Ndongeni he lost his IBO world title through inactivity.

Berman initially revealed that Komanisi was to fight reigning SA lightweight champion Thompson Mokwana until Ndongeni’s name was brought in as a possible foe.

Ndongeni was present at the GGP show at Emperors Palace last weekend where his stablemates Thulani Mbenge and Thabiso Mchunu scored resounding stoppage victories over opponents from abroad.

He had previously fought under GGP although he would like to forget his time under the promotion when he could not secure bouts resulting to him to bolt the stable.

However on the GGP website he was cited as a possible opponent for Komanisi, a report Ndongeni vehemently dismissed.

“I have been hearing this news about me fighting Komanisi and like every one else I was taken by surprise,” said Ndongeni.

“No one has spoken to me about any possible fight with Komanisi and until that happens I cannot say anything.”

Asked if he would be willing to fight under GGP again, Ndongeni said he was opened to fight under any promoter that gives him a good deal.

“But so far nothing has been said to me.”

Ndongeni said he was still preparing for his ring return against former two-time IBF world champion Malcolm Klaasen on July 28.

“That is the fight that has been offered to me and right now I am preparing for it.”

Unbeaten in 24 fights, Ndongeni is also a twotime world champion although he had held less illustrious titles such as the IBO and now the WBF.

In his last bout this past April against Namibian Abraham Ndauendapo for the WBF he did not display sharpness, a shortcoming he attributed to long spells of inactivity.

His inactivity had even forced him to seek greener pastures in US where he joined the Mayweather boxing gymnasium only to return home without fighting a single bout.

Now fighting under Sean Smith whose majority of boxers are promoted by GGP, Ndongeni is still aspiring to win a major world title with WBO lightweight champion Ray Beltran against whom he was once scheduled to face still his target.
