Hunt on for coordinator in bid to keep city clean

- TYLER RIDDIN

The Border-Kei Chamber of Business is looking for a project coordinator for their Call-2-Action initiative which aims at ridding the city’s street of litter and trash.

An advertisement for the position was placed in Wednesday’s Dispatch.

The Call-2-Action website describes the initiative’s aim as: “A Call-2-Action to transform Buffalo City into a Clean and Green, Well Governed and Innovative Metropolitan. As various business and professional associations located within the Buffalo City Metro, we feel it is imperative that our city is kept clean, is well governed and innovative to ensure new as well as re-investment into the city by business.”

The initiative uses a “City Improvement District model” where local businesses are asked to pledge donations towards service described as “topup services” which are cleaning and greening activities in predefined precincts, in this case Settlers Way.

To date Call-2-Action has successfully diverted more than 500 tons of recyclables from landfill sites in the period from February last year to June 2018, got 32 schools involved in its recycling programme and created 26 jobs.

Drayton Brown, Project Manager: Invest Buffalo City, said: “The Call-2-Action committee decided during a strategy meeting earlier this year, that the best way forward would be to employ a project coordinator full-time to engage the businesses in the first precinct [Settlers Way].”

The responsibilities of the project coordinator are described as “lobbying businesses within the precincts to contribute financially towards the Call-2-Action, thus paving the way for a special ratings area [SRA] to be implemented. They will also ensure all municipal servicers are 100% functional and report problems wherever they may arise”.

The successful applicant is expected to at least have a matric, have five years of experience in the private sector and skills in Microsoft office.

It would be advantageous to have experience within a “project management environment”.

The closing date for applications by interested individuals is midday on July 13.

Applicants have been asked to either e-mail Brown at ibc@bkcob.co.za or deliver a comprehensive CV with contactable references and a cover letter to the Executive Director, BKCOB, Camber House, The Hub, Bonza Bay Road, Beacon Bay, East London, 5241.
