Parallel structure knuckles down to business after row

- MESULI ZIFO

Despite no official confirmation from Boxing SA as a legitimate structure, the group of promoters pronouncing themselves as the executive of the Eastern Cape Boxing Promoters Association (ECBPA) is continuing with its programmes.

Led by Thando Zonke as the chairman, the group has been tackling pertinent issues afflicting boxing including the minimum purse for boxers.

Tomorrow it will hold a general meeting at Uitenhage Town Hall, Uitenhage where robust discussions on issues affecting boxing are expected to be interrogated.

This include the formation of a committee of veteran promoters who are no longer playing a leading role in the leadership of the sport.

Zonke said the wealth of experience and the knowledge of such promoters such as ailing Mzi Mnguni could not be ignored.

“These guys have been there done that, so to discard them would be the biggest mistake we can make,” he said.

“Of course we have exuberance of the young blood but we cannot overlook experience.”

The wheelchair-bound Mnguni is a former chairman of the National Boxing Promoters Association (NBPA).

Since he left, the national structure has never enjoyed stability with several efforts to revive it failing to take off.

Currently it has no executive although some promoters in the province are allegedly targeting it.

The ECBPA has also formed several other subcommittees including finance led by Rumble Africa Promotion (RAP) boss Teris Ntutu and legal and constitution led by veteran Koko Godlo.

Other issues expected to dominate the meeting include the adoption of the amendment of the constitution.

The issue of a fee a matchmaker is entitled to is also set to come under fierce debate.

So far Luyanda Kana has been blazing a trail as the matchmaker in the region even going as far as winning the national award for the job.

However he is reportedly owed by other promoters but due to the lack of policy surrounding the matchmaker’s fee he has no where to go to recover his money.

The meeting is expected to shed light on the issue of the fee so that all promoters are on the same wavelength when seeking the services of a matchmaker and not decide on their own the amount to pay him.
