The NG Kerk church hall became a fantasy realm at the weekend as the South African Cake Decorators Guild put on their biannual East London show, displaying intricate castles, elves and fairies made of sugar, fondant and icing.

The Fairy Tale themed competition saw participants spending hours preparing to exhibit almost 40 beautifully decorated cakes.

“We had a very successful event this year, with people streaming into the hall to admire the cakes and figurines throughout the weekend,” said EL Cake Decorators Guild chairwoman Susan Morgan.

“It’s time-consuming and a lot of work went into preparing and creating the beautiful decorations, so it was very rewarding to have great support from the public.”

This year, Port Elizabeth local sugar artist Hano’ Wilken was the overall winner, bagging the best on show trophy with his elf-inspired sugar art piece.

Wilken was awarded 97% and gold status for his 3D creation, which depicts three detailed and lifelike elves at the foot of a tree stump transformed into an elf daycare.

Wilken left no detail unattended, making one of the elves a cornsilk beard and adding intricacies to each of his figurines.

“I am stoked! I was hoping for gold but never expected best on show,” said Wilken, who spent three weeks completing his winning piece.

Wilken and his wife, Riëtte run House of Bakes in Port Elizabeth, allowing Wilken to follow his passion as a full-time job.
