Mandela Day gift for kids of Peddie
Khulani Educare Centre in Ntloko village in Peddie on Wednesday benefited from former President Nelson Manda’s centenary celebrations when they received a R40 000 cheque, three Ilali flushable and childfriendly toilets and toys – and had their premises painted.
This was done by the Amathole district municipality in partnership with AngloGold Ashanti, the Ngqushwa municipality, the department of social development and department of mineral resources.
ADM spokesman Siyabulela Makunga said they had to do something good in Madiba’s name. “It was a successful event and the turnout was great. The community came out in numbers to witness the effort.”
The entities joined hands to pledge for a safe working environment for miners. A candlelight ceremony took place as a symbolic gesture for all the miners who had lost their lives in the call of duty.
Among those at the event were ADM mayor Nomfusi Nxawe, Ngqushwa mayor Mnikelo Siwisa, mineral resources regional manager Brenda Ngebulana, council chief whip Solomzi Ndwayana, ADM council speaker Nnceba Ndikinda, nkosi Thandisizwe Njokweni and former Mbhashe mayor Nonceba Mfecane.
Nxawe said: “Together with our partners we continue to work tirelessly to ensure that ADM reaches its greatness and becomes a municipality that drives a developmental agenda across society. We are mindful of the importance of the foundation phase in moulding future leaders among our communities, hence this partnership with AngloGold.”
