Foundation gives kids right fillip with ‘Cup’
The Xhanti Msauli Foundation aims to take more kids off the streets of Mdantsane by giving them a golden chance to play rugby.
The foundation will on Wednesday participate in the U19 MEC Cup to be staged at the NU1 Stadium.
The organisation founded by Xhanti Msauli, trains and mentors pupils from Mzomhle High School, Khulule, Buchule Tech High School, and Wongalethu High School, and other schools around Mdantsane.
“From those schools we have managed to recruit good players and we have named that team the Hurricanes (U19).
“Basically in a nutshell, we organise rugby games with former Model C schools around East London, so these kids can get the feel of playing more organised sport.”
Msauli started the foundation in 2015 after he identified a gap that needed to be filled in township school sport.
“I saw that the sport that was going on at the time was just a copy and paste fixture, and was not meant to develop the young players.
“So that’s when I decided to start this community project that would work to address that need to develop our players for opportunities – that are mostly available to players from affluent areas,” said Msauli.
“So far we’ve played against Port Rex, Breidbach, and we recently played against Hudson Park,” he added.
