Bay bring A-game to doubles

Beacon Bay A finished top of the Buffalo City mixed doubles first tennis league, beating Alfa 4-0.

Ryan Armstrong and Lizelle Botha set the ball rolling by beating Lester Barkhuysen and Joy Brits 6-4 6-2.

They dropped only one game against Tony Brits and Kim O’Leary. In the closest match of the encounter, Tony Brits and O’Leary fought tooth and nail against Beacon Bay’s Sam McQuirk and Arlien Myburgh, eventually succumbing 7-10 in a final set tiebreaker.

Old Boys and Beacon Bay B drew in matches with Old Boys gaining the nod on points.

In the opening match Daniel Hendel and Cherie Biggs upset the unbeaten run in the league of Ryan Little and Jenny Milne by gaining a 6-2 6-3 victory.

Beacon Bay’s Grant Stuart and Cindy Taylor shoe-horned their way past Jason Bezuidenho­ut and Jilda Manson in a 20point final set tiebreaker.

The duo registered a 6-1 6-4 win over Stuart and Taylor.

Bezuidenho­ut and Manson emerged heroes of the Old Boys side when they gained a 6-4 6-3 victory over Daniel Hendel and Cherie Biggs to level matches.

In the final tally Old Boys gained seven points to their opponents’ four.

Thomas Hellman and Emma Marx starred for Gonubie in their drawn encounter with Destiny. Both matches were won on final set tie-breakers.

Having edged past Destiny’s Avela Ndlabhu and Siviwe Gogo, they continued to defeat Kwanda Mbalekwa and Sisipho Ndlabhu.

In the second league Stirling’s Zane Bernard, Greg Goodwin, Vanessa Sweet and Denise Verheul registered a 9-3 victory over the Old Boys team of John and Dave Bartlett, Alison Baxter and Di Harraway.

The closest fixture of the weekend occurred in the third league when Buffalo Flats Khoisan narrowly defeated Mdantsane.
