Duo to conquer African horizons
Intrepid professional adventurer Peter van Kets is all set to conquer new African horizons when he traverses a mountain range in Rwanda and Uganda, summits three volcanoes and kayaks the length of Lake Kivu in an expedition called Beyond the Rift Valley.
This is the second “Beyond” inspirational expedition undertaken by East Londoner Van Kets and Cape Town photo- journalist Jacques Marais.
The duo spent a month last year mountain biking through 1,300km of desolate desert along the border of Namibia’s Skeleton Coast.
After Beyond the Rift Valley and over the next four years, there will be three more adventures to come in the series, which are a celebration of human endeavour and highlight African regions under environmental threat.
After nine months of intensive training, the first leg will be from Cape Town to Kigali, a journey of 5,400km, much of it on torturous roads to the Rwanda capital on September 15.
“Once there the real expedition starts,” said Van Kets, who, along with Marais and a support team will then take on the world-first human-powered navigation along the Rwandan section of the NileCongo Divide.
Once three lofty volcanoes – Karisimbi, Bisoke and Mount Sabyinyo – have been summited – the team will continue along the watershed between the Nile and Congo rivers, documenting an ecological zone which stretches the length of Rwanda.
