U19 Elephants thrashed again

- GEORGE BYRON

EP Elephants were eaten alive by the Sharks who thrashed them 134-7 in the national U19 tournament in Durban.

It is believed to be one of the biggest drubbings in the history of the national junior tournament, with tries raining down from start to finish.

In another massacre the EP Elephants U21 side crashed to a heavy 99-7 defeat against the Sharks in a onesided clash.

Ahead of the tournament EP president Andre Rademan said things had not been looking good for his teams because they were fielding club players against professionals.

Asked on Sunday if he was considering pulling his junior teams out of the national tournament after the latest round of embarrassing thrashings, Rademan said: “No, definitely not.”

The heavy drubbings come in the wake of huge defeats the previous weekend when the Lions junior side also thrashed their EP junior counterparts.

The Elephants U21 side were hammered 120-0 by the Lions Cubs side and the U19 side stumbled to a 66-5 defeat against the visitors.

Matters are just as bad on the senior front and the EP Currie Cup First Division clash was lost 70-12 by a rampant Boland Cavaliers side in their opening game.

There was welcome respite for the senior team because their match against the Namibian Welwitschias, which had been scheduled for Sunday, was cancelled.

The Namibian team withdrew from the tournament at the last minute because of cash problems.
