Stars step up to empower women

- TYLER RIDDIN

Students at the Walter Sisulu Butterworth campus were treated to a star-studded Women Empowerment Seminar and Gala Dinner on Saturday.

Scandal! actress Lusanda Mbane said in a release that the programme sought to develop balanced, self-confident women. She said they wanted to see “women who know their worth and their strength and who understand the power within them, and are able to use it to navigate their way through life”.

The seminar also featured another celebrity entrepreneur and actress, Ayanda Borotho, who spoke on women “freeing themselves of the negative narratives around what women ought to be”.

Lerato Mvelase, an Isibaya actress, discussed the issue of spirituality, and actress-presenter Noluthando Meje spoke on unpacking the pressures that face young women today.

Eastern Cape-based entrepreneurs Pumla Kema and Tandolwetu Yokwana spoke on the issues of entrepreneurship and mental illness respectively.

The day’s programme was followed by a gala dinner, where the university management announced that the Young Women Empowerment Seminar was set to become an annual event, which would grow in size and impact as the years progress. The university also plans to introduce a Young Men Empowerment Programme in 2019 so young men at the university can also benefit from such a programme.
