A woman’s touch never fails

Bunu gets the laugh each time despite challenges she faces in an industry dominated by her male counterparts Being a female in a male-dominated industry has not intimidated the Whittlesea-born comedian, Khanyisa Bunu.

Bunu, who left her teaching career to focus on comedy, said she did not allow anyone to belittle her because she is a woman.

“But in the same breathe, the challenges I face as a comedian are challenges that any other comedian faced.

This question comes up a lot, but I use being a female to my advantage,” she said.

She said it was easier for a female comedian to make a lasting impression, in a line-up that is dominated with names.

“Even if people don’t remember your name, but they will remember that female comedian that is the advantage of it,” she said.

She said she left teaching because she felt like she had done everything she could do as a teacher and it was not her ambition to be a school principal.

“I wanted to do work that I will enjoy at the same time. I had to explore other interest in me,” she said.

It was at the moment that Bunu saw an advert of a reality competition show, “So you think you are funny”. “I went for auditions because I believe and still believe that I am funny. I was in the top six in the competition,” she said.

Bunu is now also an actress, something she said came by chance.

“I used to do sticks for ‘The late night with Lois Gola and Bantu hour’,” she said.

The producer of Sestop La, saw one of her sticks that went rival on social media.

“He invited me. I did not necessarily auditioned for my role in the show, it was just a screen test, that was the beginning of my acting career,” she said. Bunu said she would deliver her best during her performance.

“It is a comedy show, people should come expecting to laugh and have a good time,” she said.
