Border can hold heads high after Cup

- ROSS ROCHE rossr@dispatch.co.za

After a thrilling 2018 Africa Cup T20 competition came to its conclusion at Buffalo Park on Monday afternoon, Border cricket will have been happy with the show that they put on over two weeks.

With some good weather for once making sure all the matches were able to be played, the union hosted pool C and then the finals weekend, with some brilliant cricket on show throughout.

“I was very excited and proud of all the organisation for the Africa Cup. Different departments all came together to make sure that we hosted a very successful tournament,” said Border CEO, Thando Booi.

“I believe we pulled it through and it talks to our ability to host events of the highest quality, including international events, and we hope that we will be recognised for that with more top quality content.

“We were honoured to have president of Cricket South Africa, Chris Nenzani here, and he gave us assurances that this was the way to go.”

It was also a great tournament for the hosts, who finally progressed past the pool stage in the fourth edition. Their previous two attempts were hampered by rain, and made it into their inaugural final.

However, it was not to be a fairytale tournament for Border and they just fell at the final hurdle, being edged out by Gauteng in a grandstand finale.

“I was very proud of the team. The boys did exceptionally well to get as far as they did and were very unlucky on the day. You win some, you lose some, and sometimes it is how you win or lose that matters, and I think the boys left everything on the field,” said Booi.

Border cricket will now turn their attention to the Proteas, who they will be hosting in a T20 match against Zimbabwe on Tuesday, October 7.

“This was the perfect start to the season and a wonderful way to get us ready for the international between the Proteas and Zimbabwe,” said Booi.

“I only realised today that it is just two weeks time until the match. We are really excited for it and are ready to host the Proteas once again.”
