Jessie told to report back on elective conference
Hundreds of ANC supporters in Dr WB Rubusana region in East London have given deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte until Monday to report back to them about the legitimacy of last month’s elective conference.
They threatened to make Buffalo City Metro ungovernable if she failed to do so. Eight branches lodged disputes after Pumlani Mkolo was announced regional chair after beating Xola Pakati in a tightly contested conference.
Among the branches which registered a dispute was Ward 25 in Phakamisa.
On Friday, Ward 25 branch secretary Noxolo Tshaka said: “It’s not acceptable that a month after we registered disputes, Jessie has not given a report.
“Mkolo and his group continue with business as usual... They’re changing council executive even though Jessie has not confirmed whether this conference was properly constituted.”
No changes have been made in municipal leadership but the regional executive is on record saying it would reconfigure the mayoral committee. Duarte and a team of national appeals committee members are probing the complaints. Her initial report recommended the Mkolo-led regional executive be disbanded. However, ANC SG Ace Magashule later announced more complaints had been submitted and the report was shelved until the last group had also been given a hearing.
