A Mdantsane homeowner, who has been accused of renting out a room to a suspected drug dealer, told the more than 100 livid residents who had marched to his NU16 home, demanding to see the back of his tenant, that some of the marchers were themselves dealing in drugs.

Siganeko Thuweni told them that he used to sell dagga but had stopped, saying some of those who had marched from the Inyibiba police station in NU14 were drug dealers, and not his tenant.

Residents’ spokesperson Sithandile Vangani told Thuweni that they were aware that his tenant was a drug dealer.

“The buyers [drug users] are desperate. They want to smoke every hour. As a result we have house break-ins and they steal our things and sell them in order to get income to come and buy Mandrax.”

Police spokesperson Captain Nkosikho Mzuku confirmed the residents handed a memorandum of demands to the station commander.

Mzuku said the house was raided a few times last year after information from the public was received “but each time with very little success”.

Mzuku said the police were still investigating two house breakins that occurred on Saturday and Monday, where two TV sets were stolen from two houses.
