Potholes now two years old

-

IN 2016 I went to the BCM offices in East London to report my dissatisfaction about the way the residents of Ward 21 in NU13 where I live were being taken for granted by the authorities, including the ward councillor at the time.

When I reported the potholes in my street at the East London BCM offices, I was referred to Mdantsane’ s NU6 offices.

When I went there in 2016, I was told that our street would be fixed around October 2016.

Come October there was no movement on fixing the bad potholes and I felt I was being undermined as a ratepayer as well as a taxpayer. The street was tarred during the apartheid era during the rule of the late Lennox Sebe’s notorious regime (CNIP). This regime took away the dignity of our parents by confiscating their four-roomed houses and allocating them to CNIP supporters.

The ANC government has proven unable to address this issue of confiscated houses.

Now the ANC government is forcing the CNIP victims to accept RDP houses, but the confiscated properties were 54m², fourroomed houses with 300m² yards. The government wants to build 40m² houses with 125m² yards. This is an insult.

Meanwhile BCM is currently busy regravelling the non-tarred roads in NU13, Ward 21 and the streets in question will never be completed, as is the norm under the current government.

The residents of Ward 21 cannot even be issued with municipal rates bills but are expected to pay their accounts.

Money is stolen on a daily basis in this country and there is no one held accountable. Our main problem is that there is no real alternative party to vote for.

The apartheid regime oppressed black people and the ANC government is subjecting those who do not have relatives in power to the worst. When can we enjoy the fruits of our sacrifices? Mzwamadoda Yonana, Mdantsane

The overgrown sidewalks and sheer neglect on the one side of the road where druggies are camping out and the mechanical work taking place on the side of the road are unappealing. The old Railway building is an eyesore. Why not demolish it or make it a base for security companies to use for patrolling the area? Bush clearing should be done to neaten the area. I am sure businesses would appreciate the upgrade.

Don’t let a shopper fall into a hole in our pavements and be forced to spend Christmas in hospital and not with their loved ones
