WSU records 3 losses

- NICHOLAS MCGREGOR

The WSU All Blacks failed to make Varsity 7s quarterfinals after the team from East London lost to Madibaz, CPUT and UWC on their first day of the tournament at Pirates Rugby Club in Johannesburg.

Their opening game was against Madibaz, where both teams managed to score three tries apiece, but it was Madibaz who came tops, defeating WSU 21-7. Madibaz broke the deadlock when skipper Riaan Esterhuizen ran the ball 40m to score, despite some rock solid defence.

WSU struck back quickly though with the big number one Lusanda Xakwana breaking from the halfway line, darting around the defence and scoring under the posts.

Madibaz came back after half time with Ivan-John du Preez making his break to get his team back in the lead.

The Eastern Cape derby heated up when WSU's Snish Mpontshane finished off a wonderful WSU move to score between the posts.

WSU then compounded their lead with Ayakha Skweyiya making a wonderful break to score in the corner.

Madibaz would end off proceedings with a try from Lindelwe Zungu, with the PE side's conversion giving them the edge. WSU then took on CPUT.

WSU made CPUT pay for overcooking the opening kick-off and Mpontshane walked over the tryline to open the scoring but his efforts were undone by Lucan Kirchner who scored a converted try.

It was Kirchner who was on hand to score for his charges second try and CPUT added another just before half time to command a comfortable 21-5 lead.

CPUT crossed the chalk three times in the second half which included a power play try to claim an emphatic 47-5 victory over WSU in Pool A.

WSU's final game of the day was against UWC who lost 50-5 to a ruthless UWC team.

WSU tried to keep up with the Capetonians, but UWC dominated proceedings only allowing WSU one try.

WSU will now play in the

Shield semi-final.
