“I love growing plants, I love creating pretty spaces and I love developing the inner artist in people,” she said.

“I always tell people that gardening is similar to cooking, where you start off by looking up a macaroni and cheese recipe and in no time you end up making it blindfolde­d and you are able to add your own twist to it. Gardening is the same.

“If you’re guided in the right direction about what to plant and where, half the battle is won. Plants want to grow – you've just got to give them the ideal setting.”

Hatting says landscapin­g begins with an initial consultati­on in which she meets her client and studies the site plan.

Then she looks at the current state of the garden and she and the client discuss what they want the garden to look like.

From there clients are given two options – they can buy the design from Hatting and make use of their own gardeners, or allow Hatting to perform the transforma­tion herself.

“Every style I do is different. Some people like a country style, some people like a more formal style. Some want statues, others like water features like fountains. I do them all.

“I always tell my clients that a good garden does not just lie with the landscaper; they have a role to play too.

“They can’t just plant it and leave it; it’s your baby. You have to love it too.” they’re aware
