Past and present pupils gathered in a marquee on the Southernwood Primary grounds last Friday to celebrate the school’s centenary founders’ day.

The school started in a building in St Georges Road in Southernwood between October 4 1918 and October 2 1920. Southernwood Primary School in its present state was opened by James Stewart.

Past pupil Vanessa Jooste was the guest speaker and encouraged pupils to always have their eyes on the end goal, to preserve and work hard.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch Jooste said: “I am happy to be part of my old school’s 100th celebration. Coming back as an adult I just realise how small the place is, yet as a little kid it seemed so big.”

In attendance was past pupil Sibaphiwe Ndlela, who is now an independent writer and theatre show producer.

Ndlela said: “I am proud to be a product of such a rich history. My love for writing was formed in this very school.”

Principal Michelle Rothmann thanked the positive contributions and hard work by staff and pupils in making Southernwood Primary a school of excellence.

“I am proud to be part of the 100th mark of the school although my journey has not been long at the school but a lot of work has been done.”

Rothmann also shared with the guests that the school is growing as they are anticipating the arrival of two pre-fab structures to house additional Grade 2 and 3 classes.

Selborne College cultural society joined the school to celebrate the centenary.

The cultural society donated R15,000 to the school for the renovation of the kitchen.

Sikhuthaza Dliwayo, a Grade 12 pupil at Selborne College and chair of the cultural society, said: “We wanted to raise money that we can donate and know that it will have a lasting effect to the school.”
