Gavin knocks them out of water yet again

- MESULI ZIFO

Santa boxer Gavin Nkwenteni continued with his impressive trajectory as he won his sixth bout by TKO against Mzukisi Mthalane in a mini-flyweight over six rounds at the Mdantsane Indoor Centre on Friday.

To date, the 27-year-old product of Jackie Gunguluza has won five out of six pro fights by TKO.

Recalling his bout with the Cape Town opponent who sought to finish him off from the first round, he said: “I knew I was going to knock him down, his punches were not hard compared to mine. I watched his fight on television earlier this year and that made me realise that he is the type of boxer who likes to apply pressure and [is] attack-minded.”

The Santa-based southpaw boxer had a busy night at the office, he was penalised on the third round for holding before finally ending the durable Mthalane’s night via TKO in the fifth round.

as Nkwenteni blocked many of his shots.

“My plan was to be patient with him but things did not go exactly how we planned it to.

“The fight was easy; it is just that I did not do what my trainer instructed me to do.

“He was also holding me, and that made me not fight well but I just knew that a loss against him was not going to happen.”

The former amateur soccer player aims to take his career to greater heights.

“I started with the sport in 2010 after the soccer season closed and I wanted to stay fit.

“I trained for some time with the Santa Boxing Club and there were never any fights for me.”

Nkwenteni continued: “There was a tournament in Mdantsane later that year. I fought my first opponent and lost my first fight on points but what motivated me was that it was the best bout of the tournament and that was when I decided to continue with boxing. I won by TKO and I turned pro in 2015 and ever since I turned professional I have won five out of six fights already.

“The community of Santa has really supported us and we want to make sure that we become the first champions from this area.”
