Divvy up caravan park

-

R500k for 50 Braai Stands in Nahoon” (DD, Oct 23) refers. The only common-sense solution for the Nahoon Caravan Park is for the land to be divided up into plots and sold to new homeowners. The plots will certainly be in demand and thereafter luxury houses, in line with the stature of other houses in the area, will quickly be built.

Not only will this supply immediate and ongoing employment to many, it will be at no cost to the metro. On the contrary, the revenue from the land sales will be substantial.

Additional income from construction fees and required plans and the like will also boost the coffers of our local authority.

Thereafter the metro will receive, at no ongoing effort, guaranteed monthly rates at their now exorbitant rate. Plus there will be revenue from other services such as electricity.

An additional common-sense consideration is to use the front portion of the caravan park to enlarge the often congested car park servicing the beach area.

The downside is zero.

The alternative is the disaster the metro is currently embarking on. A disaster with no benefit to the city, and worse, it is to be funded by the already overburdened ratepayers.

The Nahoon Caravan Park has been a white elephant for 30 years. I can only imagine at what monthly cost it is run – and for who? As far as I can see, it is used largely by construction companies for their temporary workers and other drifters looking for the cheapest tent and shower in town.

I can foresee that the chalets – if and when they are eventually built, will be at exorbitant cost – and will realise only a dribble of income for the metro.

What an expensive mess.
