Komani-based Breakers Rugby Club came out the winners of the inaugural annual Queen’s Casino Rugby Tournament at the weekend.

The tournament saw five teams in two streams tackling each other.

Queen’s College Renegades beat Breakers’ second team 37-7, in the finals, taking away R8,000 and a full playing kit, while Shining Stars walked away with R4,000 as runners up.

It was, however, not that easy in stream A as Shining Stars, Breakers first team and Old Collegians battled it out for the coveted R15,000 prize money and kit prize.

Mlungisi stadium was abuzz with music and jovial rugby lovers.

The Queen’s College Renegades is made up of Queen’s College first team players and Old Boys, including Balungile Chala who ran 100m in a record time of 11 seconds at the age of 15.

Collegians won their first match against Shining Stars 24-12. Breakers then played the Shining Stars and won the match 64-19.

Breakers president Mthuthuzeli Zepe, voiced his pride in his team at a gala dinner at Queen's Casino on Saturday night.

Zepe said rugby was growing in Komani and Breakers would be at the forefront of such growth as the team continued to produce excellent talent.

Tournament organiser and former Pumas hooker Lamla Maneli said next year the tournament will be closer to the end of the rugby season.

He said at that time there is more interest while players are still fit.
