Eastern Cape DA leader and premier candidate Nqaba Bhanga has slammed politicians in Mthatha for not serving the communities, and has vowed to overthrow the ANC in that region.

He was speaking at the official opening of the party’s first ever Mthatha office, something he said would prove to Mthatha communities, and especially rural areas, that the DA was there as a new vehicle for change.

“Mthatha alone was the place to go and live in. Everyone wanted to live here because it was a better place. Look at the infrastructure in Mthatha, but politicians like myself wake up and wear beautiful ties and go to a fancy office and say they are working. There’s nothing that these politicians here are doing to service the people,” said Bhanga.

He said Mthatha used to be the business hub of the former Transkei but did not look the part now.

“Therefore we are bringing this office in the face of them [politicians] to show them that something new is coming, something that will bring change to the communities, and we are putting it in front of them,” he said, adding that as the DA they could not allow the economic potential of Mthatha to be destroyed.

Bhanga said poor service delivery had become so prevalent that even the lack of sanitation and problems like potholes seem normal.

“Our people still do not have water, they do not have sanitation and we cannot say we are used to that and it is fine. There is nothing normal about people drinking from dirty rivers,” said Bhanga.

He said as a DA leader, he had overthrown many opponents and would surely do the same in Mthatha.

DA councillor in the King Sabata Dalindyebo municipality, Raymond Knock, said the office would help stamp their presence in the area.
