Boost for fire victims and young golfers

A total of R21m was raised for the hundreds of Duncan Village fire victims and budding golf players at a golf event in East London on Sunday.

The event, organised by East London based Anax Logistics company, is the latest charitable effort as the community has come together and assisted fire victims, some of whom have lost everything in the devastating fire.

The fire left more than 300 families homeless when the 200 shacks burnt down two weeks ago. No one was killed in the fire.

The event at the East London Golf Club saw golfers buying holes for R3,000 each. There were 18 holes.

Anax Logistics owners Eric and Fezi Mgqibelo said they had to do their bit for the fire victims.

Speaking to the Daily Dispatch on Sunday, Eric said 66 golfers swung for charity.

Some of the money raised would be donated to budding Mdantsane golfers.

Fezi said education was important and following the devastating fire in Duncan Village, the pupils would need new uniforms and books.

Eric, the company’s managing director, said they were hoping to make the golf day an annual event.

“We are doing this in line with the10 years anniversary of our company,” he said.

Ronnies Motors, Strata insurance brokers, VIP Promotions, Global Business Solutions, Goscor and NBC were just some of the companies that took part in the initiative.
