SUBS players motivated

- MFUNDO PILISO mfundop@dispatch.co.za

Swartkops Valley United Brothers (SUBS) chairperson Bongo Zondani expects a more intelligent Birmingham City than the one he watched at the SAB league promotional playoffs at the Grahamstown Army Base earlier this year.

The Port Elizabeth-based outfit will visit City in an ABC Motsepe League encounter at the North End Stadium on Saturday.

Zondani said he wouldn’t take the third-tier league newcomers lightly as he knew that would be a dumb move on his part which might end up costing them the game.

“In this league there’s no newcomers at this stage of the season and the last time we saw City playing was at the promotional playoff tournament in Grahamstown [Makhanda].

“We don’t know how they have been playing, plus I’m sure that things have changed as well in that team because they might have reinforced their squad,” said Zondani.

“It’s because of those reasons we can’t underestimate them and say it’s going to be a walk in the park.

“We are just going there to compete and fight for three points but a draw will be enough for us,” said Zondani.

He added that they wanted to maintain their “good position on the log because even with the teams above us, there’s not much of a difference with the points they’ve managed to collect so we are still on par with our plans.

“We just have to close the three point gap between us and No1 [Amavarara].

“We have stopped chopping and changing the squad because that’s what was derailing our campaign last season.

“Now we have a consistent team, especially our back four.

“We have been motivating our players with incentives and now it’s finally bearing results.’’
