It was a thrilling ride for all who turned out to witness the oncein-a-lifetime South African Historic Grand Prix that took place at the East London racetrack over the past weekend.

Reportedly over 3,000 people turned up to watch the preWorld War era cars that raced at the track in the South African Grand Prix from 1934-1939.

It was truly a sight to behold seeing these cars whiz around the track and although it wasn't for any honours it was still amazing to hear what these cars sound like and see how they could handle around the track.

“They were just exhibition races, so we didn't have winners and a podium or anything, it was just a chance to show what these cars could still do almost 80 after they first raced here,” explained the event PR officer Patrick Gearing.

“It was spectacular, we were very chuffed, it was an emotional day in many respects, especially for some of the families who re associated with the cars and it was a special occasion seeing all those cars in action on the same track so many years later.”

The cars now head off for Cape Town where they will be on show this coming weekend at the Val de Vie estate.

“The cars left today [Monday] and will be going through Port Elizabeth, and then down through the garden route to Val de Vie,” said Gearing.

“The cars that have number plates will drive down, while the others will follow in their containers.

“It is going to be a great finish to the week as they will be on show with around 150 other cars.”
