Dispatch takes the honours
Two journalists fêted for their work
Awards for SA’s top journalist, investigative reporter, multi-media reporter
The Daily Dispatch scooped three awards at the Vodacom Journalist of the year awards on Thursday night in Johannesburg.
Former Dispatch chief reporter Bongani Fuzile walked away with the sought-after investigative journalist award – and the overall journalist of the year award for his “We Found Them” story on the hundreds of former mineworkers who had not received their retirement and pension payouts.
“Winning this award means a lot. It looks at how our people, mostly those in rural areas are forgotten and, for us as journalists, we are their voices,” the Sunday Times senior reporter said. “This is for the Dispatch team, from journalists to management for making sure that we tell the story differently from other media houses.”
Dispatch online reporter, Sino Majangaza, bagged the multi-platform award for his series of print stories, photographs and videos that shone the light on the lack of student accommodation in the province.
It showed the sheer desperation of students living in appalling conditions.
“Winning the award means so much to me as an online reporter,” he said.
Daily Dispatch editor Sibusiso Ngalwa said: “As the Dispatch family we are proud of Bongani and Sino’s achievements, the awards are a fitting recognition of the hard work that our colleagues put into these important projects.”
