Boost to filming in EC could bring many spin-offs

-

The film industry is a global phenomenon and, with an audience of billions, it makes sense for film producers in this country to pursue this field. We often hear about Hollywood, Bollywood and Nollywood, yet South Africans, with all their talents, have not joined this entertainment genre with much vigour. But that may yet change if the powers that be have their way right here in the Eastern Cape.

Last month finance MEC Oscar Mabuyane announced in his mid-term budget at the Bhisho legislature that he would pump R10.4m into assisting prospective filmmakers.

The genesis of this inspired thinking was Mthobeli Mali, a resident, who made a plea for more resources to develop the local industry.

It resonated with Mabuyane and he opted to run with this idea by injecting millions into the film industry.

No doubt it will help in easing job losses in this economically strained province.

Recent stats show that the unemployment rate has accelerated to 27.5% in the third quarter from 27.2% in the second quarter of 2018.

Of deep concern is that there are job gains in seven of the nine provinces, but the Eastern Cape and Free State are languishing behind.

So it comes as some respite that filmmakers have started rolling their cameras on these shores.

About 30 budding Eastern Cape actors have been handpicked to showcase their talents in a new movie, In The Scheme of Things, being filmed around East London.

The film will be released in September in theatres around the world. Some of SA’s top actors including Baby Cele, Luthuli Dlamini and Dumisani Mbebe will show the world talent is not limited to John Kani of Black Panther fame.

As was once pointed out to premier Phumulo Masualle, there is no need for local talent to go to Gauteng to make names for themselves, they can do it right here at home.

There are so many positive spin-offs – with movies come sets that must be built by carpenters; local fashion designers and makeup artists can all benefit.

The exposure will be immense for the Eastern Cape and it is bound to attract tourists from far afield .

We can only say: lights, camera, action!
