The Border motorsport season comes to its exciting conclusion this weekend with two events set to thrill local racing fans at the East London Grand Prix Circuit.

South Africa's longest motor race, the ever popular 84th Border 100 will take centre stage on Saturday, with plenty of great racing in store, before the season closes out with the Top End Speed Run, which will see some extremely quick racing on Sunday.

“It will be a thrilling weekend. In each category we have about 30-odd competitors in the Modified Saloons and Historics, I think 25 in the open top series; we have good support with the bikes as well, so some packed fields to battle it out,” said Border Motorsport PR Dave Kirkman.

“It is also the end of the season for everyone, so there should be some brilliant racing as guys have got time to fix their cars, so they won't be holding anything back on the day.

“It will be very exciting, I think a great place to watch will be in the esses for the public, because there should be some great passing and you get really close to the track there.”

The speed run on Sunday then should see the cars reach some exhilarating speeds down the main straight.

“On Sunday we have the top end speed run with some really fast cars, they will be coming out of beacon with a rolling start, and will head down the main straight and there will be a speed trap at the end.

“I think the fastest car last time was about 260km per hour, so it is very fast and lekker to watch.

“It is not an MSA (Motorsport SA) event, but basically a fundraiser for the circuit. We are encouraging families to come out this weekend, we are keeping the cost low on both days with just R30 entry for adults and R10 for scholars and youngsters, so it is affordable and great entertainment and would make for a fun day out with the family.”

Qualifying starts at 7am on Saturday morning, with the first races taking place at 10am and the action should finish by 5.30pm. On Sunday the action starts at 10am until 3.30pm.
