Traffic staff really fantastic

-

With poor service and inefficiency having become almost the norm, especially in municipal and government departments, the Gonubie traffic department is to be commended for the absolutely outstanding service they render, especially in the heat without a working airconditioner. The personnel dealing with the public are polite and efficient and so helpful and don’t even stop for tea or lunch breaks because of the long queues of people. Quite amazing! — Ellen Ettinger, via e-mail

Clear this rubbish...

I would like to know from BCM when they will take the rubbish in High Way Gardens. We were informed by BCM, through our Daily Dispatch, that the strike is over and services will return but to date in our area and surroundings, I don’t see the different and hope the powers that be will intervene.

This can’t be accepted as we are paying for these service. For goodness sake, we are one week to Christmas. — Zwelakhe Gift Naki, Quigney

... and King as well

Please can you tell me when King William’s Town will be cleaned up, if ever? Now we have mud water coming out of our taps?

The municipal workers do not deserve their jobs, let alone the R10,000 that they got. Where are we going to? The law of destruction is alive and thriving. — Nicolette Dell, via e-mail

Tragic loss of life

The massacre of the initiates continues in the Eastern Cape and nationally yearly, with government officials giving statistics and traditional leaders merely continue condemning these deaths on media statements and interviews on talk radio shows.

The society appears to have become numb to this reality as certain sectors of the society continues to claim that it is their domain and no one dares to interfere. Many young men lose their lives under their watch with very little measurable outcomes to what they have been professing over years to be doing to curb these deaths.

To me these deaths are manmade and can be prevented. It is absurd to me that no one has ever been found to be legally responsible for any of these deaths; despite many purported changes in policy to address this.

We have not heard of anyone who has ever been arrested, prosecuted and convicted of these deaths.

Clearly there are no consequences for such negligence. The unnecessary cutting short of young men’s lives that put their trust in the custom, the system and adults around them to guide them have dismally failed them.

The sad part is that even those that escape death and survive with complications which include loss of and disfigurement of their sexual organs often are failed by the system.

No one cares what happens to these young men.

Why is that? — Pumeza Luwaca, via e-mail

Give us breakdown

Since the deal is done some questions need to be answered or paperwork must be produced. (DD, BCM to spend R20m on top sports events, December 13 refers). Detailed breakdown on grant allocation they (Chippa United) receive from the PSL, how it’s being spend and on what. Same goes for the NMB funding they receive. An audited financial statement must be produced detailing operational affairs of the club and bank statements in respect of (iro) how money is being made iro income and expenditure. As a ratepayer I would like these questions to be looked at and investigated by the powers that be. The ANC councillors are representing the ratepayers in council, not their political party or a soccer club. — Burton Brown, Buffalo Flats

Let’s save our sport

The writing was on the wall. I don’t think that the people of this region are surprised by this tragedy. The people running the Bulldogs had no interest in sport. From my memory, on two occasions, the players boycotted training sessions two weeks before important matches were to be played because of the nonpayment of salaries. There was no information from the president of the Bulldogs. Bulldogs have no sponsorship the reasons are known, no sponsors will invest in a project like this. Sports loving people must help rescue sport from this mayhem it find itself in. We need a Big Sports Indaba. — Thembani Tom, Ginsberg
