Fighting in a new corner
Fortuin makes surprise switch to rival’s camp
Nomadic boxer Sharrodene Fortuin has embarked on yet another stable-hopping exercise after she left All Winners Boxing Club (AWBC) to join her rival Bukiwe Nonina in Limpopo.
The news of Fortuin’s departure took AWBC boss Mla Tengimfene by surprise as he was busy organising a fight for her.
The talented Seymour-born boxer prepared for her last two bouts under AWBC, with varied outcomes.
She looked woeful in her first fight under the club when she was considered lucky to be given a split nod over Asandiswa Nxokwana, despite being outboxed in the majority of rounds in Mthatha in July last year.
She bounced back with a win over Thema Zuma three months later in East London.
Despite her win, she still looked far from the mesmerising boxer she was when she trained under former world champion Welcome Ncita.
Tengimfene reacted with surprise when informed of Fortuin joining Limpopo trainer Emmanuel Mutavhatsindi.
“This is news to me. The last time I spoke with her was when I told her to come back from Seymour, where she had been for the holidays,” said Tengimfene.
“She was to fight in a tournament in PE, so we wanted to start with preparations.”
Mutavhatsindi confirmed the boxer was training with him. “Yes, Fortuin is with me and she seems happy here,” he said.
Matavhutsindi is the fourth trainer to train Fortuin, who relocated to East London to further her boxing career.
Interestingly, her only loss was at the hands of Nonina.
But she has been chasing for a rematch for a while, with the pair even exchanging verbal jabs on social media.
Mutavhatsindi said the fight between the duo was unlikely now that they are stablemates.
But he said the two Eastern Cape boxers are not sharing accommodation.
Tengimfene said he did not have a contract with Fortuin, but a gentleman’s agreement.
