It’s the end of a Dynasty
DYNASTY, South Africa’s multiple champion stallion, has succumbed to illness following a recent operation for colic. He was 19-years-old.
Bloodstock consultant John Freeman reported late on Monday that the stallion lay down in his stable at Ridgemont Highlands following what could have been a stroke, and that he didn’t get up. He died peacefully and in no pain.
The sire of 25 individual Grade 1 winners and over R111-million in stakes, Dynasty was South Africa’s Equus Outstanding Sire four times, in 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2017.
Along with his own sire Fort Wood, he was the only stallion in SA history to produce three Equus Horses Of The Year in Irish Flame (2010), Legislate (2014) and Futura (2015) and won 19 Equus Awards in total.
As a racehorse, Dynasty was the outstanding thoroughbred of his generation, winning Equus Horse of the Year and Equus Champion three-year-old male. He won nine races, including the 2003 Durban July and three other Grade 1s, and earned R2,1-million.
He was the highest rated three-year-old ever to win the ‘July’, when he raced around a field of older horses from a 20/20 draw and won going away.
Freeman, who managed his career at stud and is fielding calls from Dynasty fans around the world, commented: “If anyone could have the rare privilege of being associated with just one horse like Dynasty in a lifetime, you can say you have been truly blessed.
“He was the ultimate thoroughbred in temperament and ability, a one of a kind stallion. If just one of his sons at stud could follow in his footsteps, or be half as good, my own life will be complete. They can put me in a box and send me off!” concluded an emotional Freeman. –
