Young ballerina and friends to put on play for charity

- GUGU PHANDLE

A 10-year-old East London ballerina is redefining philanthropy.

Limi Dekeda, a Clarendon Primary School pupil, has gathered all her creative friends to host a mini-theatre production that will raise funds for the St Thomas School for the Deaf.

The Grade 4 pupil said she drew inspiration to create the production from a book titled Tullula, written by her aunt Refiloe Moahloli.

Limi and her singing, dancing and acting friends will perform an adaptation of Tullula at the Downtown Christian Centre on Saturday.

“The story is about a majestic bird called Tullula and she goes on an adventure to prove that it is never too late to change how things are done,” said Limi.

“My aunt wrote the story. There is acting, singing, ballet and dancing in the play.”

Limi said she had chosen St Thomas as their benefactor through the help of her parents, Soso and Lwazi Dekeda.

“I wanted to help those in need so I decided to put on a play since my friends and I are very good at acting.

“We started practising in March. My parents helped me look for the school. My mom has helped a lot with making the costumes and backdrops.

“My dad designed the invitation and is making the programme for the day. I am very excited,” said Limi.

She said her friends who will be performing in the production were from primary schools around East London including Beaconhurst, Stirling, Hudson and Selborne.

Limi’s mother, Soso, said: “Sometime ago Limi approached her father and me with a vision she had for raising funds for differently-abled children. We encouraged her to think of an idea to do it.

“Being an avid ballerina and aspiring actor, she came up with an idea of putting on a production with 19 of her friends.

“We then decided to dramatise Tullula.

“We have been rehearsing with them for the last two months, with the assistance of drama and dance teachers.”

The performance will start at 2pm on Saturday.
