Wits lie in wait for unpredictable Chippa

- VUYOKAZI NKANJENI

New Bidvest Wits signing Lorenzo Gordinho is expecting a tough match against an unpredictable Chippa United in the Nedbank Cup last-16 soccer fixture, taking place at the Wits Stadium in Johannesburg on Monday from 7.30pm.

“It’s hard to predict how Chippa will play,” said the 25year-old former Kaizer Chiefs defender.

“We just have to go with what we know and our performance, give our best on the day and I am sure we will come through with a win.

“We can’t go there based on what we think Chippa are going to play like because we are not actually certain. It’s a cup game and they will also want to go through to the next round.

It was back in 2010 when the Clever Boys last won the Ke Yona cup. Last season it was the Chilli Boys who cut their journey short in the competition and denied them a spot in the semi-finals.

Gordinho says winning the Nedbank title would be great.

“It would nice to be part of the team if we win the cup. The team has the motivation to win something, it’s not like we are just dropping points in the league because we want to.

“There are still a lot of games to be played and anything can happen.”

In their chase for the league honours, Wits dropped valuable points in the Absa Premiership when they drew 2-2 against Highlands Park on Wednesday.

Although disappointed with the result, the defender said spirits were high in the camp ahead of the cup match. “The cup game it is going to be very important to go through to the next round because we want to win some silverware.

“We are involved in the cup, we got through our first battle and we have our next one to come. I hope the boys are ready for the game. We are a bit disappointed with the result against Highlands but the morale is looking good in the team and I think we are ready.”

Meanwhile, Chippa goalkeeper and skipper Veli Mothwa said his players were hungry for a cup success.

The Chilli Boys missed out on an opportunity to play their first cup final last season when they were knocked out by Kaizer Chiefs in the semifinals of the Nedbank competition.

“We are hungry this season. Each and every player wants to play in the final, but for us to reach that will not be a walk in the park. We have to work hard and that starts with beating Wits on Monday.”
