SA Schools hockey boys would love a spot on Hudson’s first team
After making it into the top 12 hockey players in SA Schools and a 10-day European tour, two budding hockey players are hoping to make it into the Hudson Park hockey first team.
Callum Theron, 16, from Beacon Bay, who also plays soccer at the school, and King William’s Town-born Sinegugu Adam, 17, are both looking forward to the 2020 senior team trials at Hudson – especially after their good season last year.
“Last was a good year for us. We were in the top 12 in the country for school hockey, and after we were invited to a tournament in Belgium where we were able to brush up on our skills,” Adam said.
“Having performed well there we went on to represent SA in the Netherlands, where we played against the best players in the world, and I think that it’s going to be easy for us to make the first team at school this year or the next.”
Theron said during their European trip they also learnt more about foreign culture.
He said they were excited about showcasing the skills they had acquired during their stay abroad.
“During our stay in Belgium we played three matches and we did quite well, because we won all three, and I really enjoyed the experience.
“We really enjoyed the atmosphere there and are looking forward to expressing what we learnt from the trips.
“We gained a lot from the coaching sessions we had with the different coaches over there.
“We got a lot experience of how the sport is played in the Netherlands and Belgium, and we are hoping to bring those lessons here and hopefully break into the first team at school.
“The selections are running and hopefully we can also get included,” Theron said.
“I’m training with the first team now and I hope everything turns out OK for both of us.”
