The Daily Dispatch SuperSport Let’s Play Sports Star of the Month competition is back, and it will see this year’s winners being honoured at the glittering ceremony at the end of the year in East London.

The monthly competition, which allows school sports stars to be nominated for the monthly award, started in October last year in partnership with SuperSport Let’s Play and the Daily Dispatch.

It focuses on exposing and recognising young talent in schools between the ages of seven and 18 who are excelling in different sports codes. MultiChoice sports programmes and corporate affairs CSI manager, Sandile Luthuli, said they were planning to go all out in 2020.

“Last year we had about three months of the programme, and we came down to honour our sports stars with our partners, the Daily Dispatch.

“This year want to go the entire year and have a full year programme and have our winners for the remaining months of the year.

“We want it to culminate with a nice and big evening awards ceremony in East London, where we will celebrate with all the children who would have won during the year,” Luthuli said.

Last year’s competition saw Hudson Park High hockey player Zimkhitha Weston being named the sports star of the year, and 11-year-old multi-talented Andrew Wessels from Fort Beaufort Primary school and Eljuandro Spogter from Stirling High were named sports star of the month, respectively.

Luthuli said the main objective of the initiative was to get South African pupils physically active.

“We want our children to engage in sporting activities and through various programs and various elements that we’ve implemented at SuperSport this programme is one of the best we have to encourage children from schools across the country.

“And we are encouraging people to nominate their sports stars of the month, so they can also be recognised and their achievements can be highlighted through these awards. We encourage parents and children to embrace the benefits of being physically active,” said Luthuli.

To nominate someone for the Daily Dispatch SuperSport Let’s Play Sports Star of the Month send an e-mail to schoolsport@dispatch.co.za.

Winners receive gift packages with an average value of R600, and SuperSport will deploy a crew to the final award function at the end of the year to obtain suitable footage for content on its on-air programme.
