Sundowns ‘need luck’ to emulate Pirates — Kekana
Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana says they will do their best in their bid to emulate Orlando Pirates.
The Buccaneers remain the only club to win three major domestic trophies in a single season since the inception of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) in 1996.
Pirates won the historic treble during the 2010/2011 campaign.
They repeated this feat again a year later, while led by the now-retired defender Lucky Lekgwathi.
Sundowns have already won this season’s Telkom Knockout Cup, and they have set their sights on the Absa Premiership title and the Nedbank Cup.
“The aim for us as a club is to make sure that we win our matches and trophies every season,” Kekana said
“It doesn’t matter which trophy we get to win. We will try to win every trophy which comes our way.”
Sundowns were embroiled in an Absa Premiership title race with Kaizer Chiefs before the current season was suspended indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic in March.
The Tshwane giants had also been pitted against their Gauteng rivals, Bidvest Wits, in a Nedbank Cup semifinal tie before the campaign was halted.
The campaign is set to resume after the government gave the PSL the go-ahead to complete the suspended season.
Kekana feels they will need a little bit of luck to complete a treble by winning the Absa Premiership title and the Nedbank Cup.
“But the reality is it ’ s not as easy as it sounds.
“We need to produce some good performances. Sometimes you need a little bit of luck,” the accomplished midfielder said.
“So we will do our best, as we always do [when the season resumes].”
Sundowns are placed second on the league standings, four points behind leaders Chiefs, but the former have a game in hand.
