Leopards must beat Ajax to maintain League status

- NEVILLE KHOZA

After successive victories in the promotion play-offs, Black Leopards co-coach Morgan Shivambu is aware that their destiny in the mini-league is in their hands.

A victory against Ajax Cape Town on Friday at Rand Stadium will ensure Leopards retain their Premiership status.

They are leading the roundrobin tournament with six points; Ajax are second, but the Urban Warriors could draw level should they beat Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) in their match at Bidvest Stadium on Tuesday (3pm).

While Shivambu will be watching that match with keen interest, he says his focus is on winning Friday’s game as it will take them to nine points, where no-one can catch them.

“Our next game is against Ajax Cape Town.

“That’s where we need to sum it up because if you need to go back to the Premiership we need to win that game,” Shivambu said.

“We will see what happens on Tuesday [between Ajax and TTM]. We will take it from there. But our main thing is that we win our games, and we don’t want to depend on other teams.”

Lidoda Duvha were impressive against TTM on Saturday as they beat them 3-1 with a brace from Mwape Musonda and an Isaac Masia strike.

Thembisani Nevhulamba scored the consolation goal for TTM, who remained bottom of the standings without a point after two defeats.

“It was a good game. We dominated from the first whistle though after we scored the goal, we started to relax and they managed to get the equaliser,” Shivambu said.

“But we managed to score the second goal and we continued to dominate the game. We knew that there will be a time where they will throw everything [at us, including] long balls but we managed to deal with it very well.

“We made some changes by putting [in] fresh legs so we could continue to press them harder and we managed to get the third goal, which was good. And well done to the guys.”
