Border gets a famous new cricket coach

But CEO Mxenge denies that Ngam has left says he is still involved within the structures

Former Proteas spinner Paul Adams has been roped in as head coach of Border Cricket after the franchise parted ways with Mfuneko Ngam.

Ngam was set to take charge of the province in the new Cricket SA second division, which is scheduled to start this year.

However, the union decided to bring in a new face, accompanying the new team and cricketing structures.

But Border Cricket CEO Andile Mxenge denied that Ngam has left.

”It is not true to say that Mfuneko Ngam has been let go, as he is still involved within the Border Cricket structures,” he said.

In Paul Adams it has recruited a cricketer with a wealth of experience. The union hopes he will help Border gain promotion to the first division after it failed to secure a spot through the bid process.

Adams, who announced himself to cricket in spectacular fashion as an 18-year-old in the 1995/96 Test series against England, went on to become a household name, most remembered for his unorthodox spin bowling style.

He went on to play 45 Tests, 24 ODIs, and 12 T20s. He played his last Test match in 2004, against New Zealand in Hamilton, and eventually retired in 2008.

Adams then went into coaching, having successful stints at the Cape Cobras.

There he won multiple titles including Momentum 1 Day Cup Winners 2012/13 and 2013/14; Sunfoil 4 Day Cup Winner 2012/13 and 2013/14 and the Ram Slam T20 Winner 2014/15.

He’s now hoping to usher Border into a new era.

“It’s an exciting time in South African cricket and an exciting time in the Border region,” said Adams.

“With the new restructuring of professional cricket, it’s an opportunity to contribute and be part of building success in the region.

“Legends of cricket have come out of this region and we would like to develop some more home-grown heroes again.

“I see my role at Border as one in which I have to help nurture a team culture and to get each player to perform at optimum level.

“It’s is an honour to be named head coach for the Border region and I am excited to get to East London and to connect with the team.”

Mxenge was ecstatic about the big name they have pulled to East London.

“We are really looking forward to the new cricket season, with having the legendry Paul as our head coach.

“He brings a wealth of coaching experience and expertise to the team.

“We have no doubt that he will be successful in terms of the team’s performance and working with our coaches to develop our young talent in the black belt of South Africa,” said Mxenge.

The former spin bowling consultant for CSA is set to start his stint at Border on June 1.
