Gospel singer takes direction to help others

Launch of Afro-soul album a chance for local talent to shine

- SIVENATHI GOSA

Willowvale-born Bunono Mxokwana is popularly known as a gospel singer who performs with his brother Anathi.

But he is trying out a new musical direction with the release of his first Afro-soul album next weekend.

To mark this new chapter of his career, Mxokwana is reaching out to his community, particularly the young people who have talent in the arts.

“As someone who usually hosts or performs at events, during the Mbhashe Music talent launch I realised that there are number of talented young people who want to showcase their talents, but do not have the proper guidance,” he said.

Mxokwana will be donating branded schoolbags to three Dutywa schools — Executive Academy, Ngubethole Bam Junior Secondary and Mnandi Junior Secondary.

“There are young people who are not just artistically talented, but business-minded too,” he said.

“We want to encourage and motivate them to not give up education. I approached the Mbhashe municipality to assist with identifying beneficiaries.”

Afro house artist TNS will be the guest to deliver a motivational talk on May 23 at the launch of the album and the handover of the bags.

“This event does not only seek to promote my album, but also to uplift the talent of Mbhashe artists,” Mxokwana said.

“We need artists to be part of the event, to be visible on marketing platforms, to perform on the day, to network and to learn more about the industry and get all the incentives available.”

So far Mxokwana has managed to collect 150 school bags, but is targeting at least 600.

His love for music has not only established him in gospel singing, but led him to explore his talent in other music genres, partnering with some of the best as well as upcoming musicians.

On May 21 he will host a pre-launch of his album that will be outdoors at Vamies Guest House.

Mxokwana said the launch would also accommodate aspiring artists from the municipality.

“We have already secured Mphozisi Qalekiso, an Afro-soul artist born in Mevana location in Willowvale,” he said.

“We are looking forward to securing at least three more artists from three different areas in Mbhashe, namely Dutywa, Willowvale and Xhora, so that all the areas can be represented.”
