Gilbert’s ton leads Selborne to thrilling win over Graeme

-

St Andrew’s, Hudson, Cambridge also pick up victories

Selborne’s Tre Gilbert played a crucial role as his century helped his team to a narrow one-wicket win over Graeme College in a thrilling schools cricket match at the weekend.

Batting first, Graeme scored a respectable innings of 228/8, Qhama Ngoma top-scoring with 68 and Murray Tyson producing a well-played knock of 45.

Adam Rogers, Thomas Marais and Jaques van der Merwe each picked up two wickets for Selborne.

Tyson continued a memorable day by taking 5/69, but Gilbert’s knock proved the difference between the two sides as Selborne eventually reached 231/9.

Besides his 107, there were important contributions from Reece Wait (42) and Waden Plaatjies (33).

• In Komani, St Andrew’s took on Queen’s in a match reduced to 45 overs a side after early morning rain.

St Andrew’s chose to field first and bowled well as a unit, ensuring scoring was tough for the Queen’s batsmen on the moisture-filled pitch.

The skilful Ryan Denston showed his ball-striking ability with a sparkling 45 runs and was well supported by Ross Fitzhenry with his patient

39.

But St Andrew’s maintained the pressure and leg-spinner Laurie Apps made the most of the situation, returning the superb figures of 7/19, including two caught and bowled dismissals, a superb googly and a ripping delivery from about the wicket to the left-handed batsman Vijay George.

Their pursuit of the Queen’s total of 139 was not going to be an easy task and the home side picked up early wickets.

However, they will regret their missed opportunities when St Andrew’s were 66/3 and in the end the visitors scampered home to win by six wickets in the 28th over.

Captain Murray Wilson played magnificently for his 56 off just 59 balls and Myles Sansom delivered a fluent, supportive role securing the win with his 42 not out off 44 balls.

• Cambridge came up against Grens in an Algie Cup Twenty20 encounter and secured a comfortable seven-wicket victory.

With Kamagelo Tutu (4/22), Caleb Schaup (3/20) and Keathan Ruiters (2/16) doing the damage with the ball, Grens could manage only 127.

Aqhama Mdlulwa, who has been in the runs this term, again showcased his ability with an unbeaten 57 not out to guide Cambridge to the win.

• Hudson registered two comfortable wins in their limited overs matches against Lilyfontein and Dale College.

Lithemba Nomoyi had excellent figures of 3/14 in four overs to help restrict Lilyfontein to 124/6 in a T20 game and the Hudson batsmen capitalised on that effort to win by five wickets.

Landile Gidi played the lead role with 57 off 50 balls and Osphesona Mbekwa contributed a run-a-ball 32.

Mbekwa, with 3/6 in six overs, and Lukhanyo Hlatuka, with a superb return of 5/16 in five overs, were responsible for shooting Dale out for just 70 in their 50-overs encounter.

Hudson raced to victory by seven wickets in 15.3 overs as Lindokuhle Notshe hit 23 off 26 deliveries.
