MEET PAVITRAY PILLAY EDITOR’S NOTE

- Hello kids,

Pavitray Pillay, whose nickname is Pavs, is a marine scientist. She leads the World Wildlife Fund’s Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (WWFSASSI) and is on a mission to help us understand why choosing sustainable seafood is important.

”What’s on your plate has a massive environmental footprint,” says Pavs. So, it’s our job to know if what we’re eating is sustainable!

Do you know what a marine scientist is?

Marine scientists study creatures in the ocean. They are like detectives trying to solve puzzles about sea life.

They want to know things like:

How many different types of fish are there?

Where do whales go when they travel long distances?

What makes coral reefs so important?

But it’s not just about exploring and discovering – marine scientists also work hard to protect our oceans and the creatures that live there. They study things like pollution, climate change and overfishing to figure out how we can keep the ocean healthy for everyone, including for the fish we love to eat!

Did you know that the fish on your plate might not be as “green” as it seems?

Our oceans are very important. Along with being fun to swim in, they provide food and oxygen and can even protect us against climate change.

But overfishing can threaten marine ecosystems. The good news is that, by making informed choices, we can protect marine life and ensure a healthy ocean for everyone.

This week, Maverickids dives into the exciting world of sustainable seafood and discovers how you can make a big difference to our oceans’ survival by choosing what you put on your plate.

Until next time,

Julia Evans
