BLUE Classic

-

CLASSIC blue denim makes a come back in Spring/Summer 2017.

While many manufactures are stretching the possibilities of what can be done with denim, the trend look extends above and beyond the traditional textile definitions.

Designers at the Durban Fashion Fair, which ended on Saturday, tried their hand at evoking indigo hues in their various collections and referencing the street style vibe many of us associate with the iconic fabric.

The word “denim” is derived from the French language. The fabric was traditionally coloured blue to make jeans, which comes from the French word for Genoa, Italy (Gênes), where the first denim trousers were said to have been made.

Denim was popularised in America in the mid 19th century where tailors used it to make workwear, reinforced with rivets to ensure durability.

It’s made from sturdy cotton that is often dyed, washed and distressed to give the fabric its faded charm. Modern manufactures can, of course, replicate the look in other mediums from hair care to cosmetics and décor.

Kylie Jenner has a Denim and Bling Collection in her cosmetic range and designers such as Ralph Lauren have created the most sophisticated interiors around the colour.

At the DFF, 70s style silhouettes met aqua and sky blue palettes to create garments with an Afrocentric edge. Look for denim in unexpected items and innovative mediums this coming season. – Omeshnie Naidoo
