WHENEVER Heritage Day comes back on the calendar, we know that somewhere an informal contest of who has the best attire takes place. The holiday seeks to encourage people to take pride in who they are and where they come from. With this in mind, even MTV has a number of shows that are tailor-made to honour the day. On Saturday, on DStv channel 130, you will have 24 hours of shows that are made with South Africa and Africa in mind. So think of the new baby, Ridiculousness Africa, which has presenters Thomas Gumede, Boity Thulo and Basketmouth looking at some of the funniest videos there are out there. It might still have international content, but the fact that our own local presenters are hosting it makes it more relatable than the American version of the same show. Just for Heritage Day, the channel will show Ridiculousness Africa with a new title called Ridiculousness Africa the Series so Far. This is to give you a chance to catch up on some of the material that you might have missed and give you access to some unseen and behind-thescenes footage. If that’s not your thing, you might want to check out Lip Sync Battle Africa.

If there was ever a war of music, it is on this show.

When it first came out, we just thought it would be another adaptation of the US show, but one thing no one anticipated was how this would impact upon the African music scene.

So while the continent’s celebrities step up to the stage to go and act like kids, they mostly do it with some catchy African songs.

The show celebrates our heritage through music and it is the one place to go to if you want to know what the trending songs are right now.

With Trevor Noah agreeing to host the Mamas, the showcase that will take place next month will also be honoured on Saturday through a variety of past shows.

If you can’t wait for October 22, then this show can tide you over until then.

We all know that MTV started as a strictly music channel so it was encouraging when they moved into TV shows that music people might also love.

There are those reality shows that we could do without, but there is also a market for that genre.

The big plus for us is not only having African content, but having a whole day dedicated to African cultures. ● MTV’s SA Heritage Day package starts at 8am on DStv channel 130.
