Bravo, Nosipho, for your good example

Protests

Protesting students at Wits University didn’t want journalists to enter the campus. Why? They don’t want their violent and moronic behaviour to be caught on camera. What they do not understand is that they are going to suffer the most by repeating all this year’s subjects next year. One year wasted. Whereas, if they passed this year, they would have been in gainful employment next year. Idiots.

Students have been seen on TV throwing objects at private vehicles. Are these hooligans going to lead our country?

University mayhem. Nosipho Mngoma (Why I did the right thing ...

September 21), hats off to you for “doing the right thing”, even though it has come years later. Your mother will be proud. Surely common sense dictates that a debt has to be paid and one has to implement measures to recover a debt. Are we implying, then, that parties concerned have no policy in place to recover debt like that of NSFAS funding? Judging from Nosipho’s article, it is clear that students in receipt of this funding are not “paying back the money”. This reminds me of someone else who refused to pay back the money. Obviously, if money is paid back, then, as Nosipho states, “one person, at least, can start their education...” Is this why our taxes are so exorbitant ? If fees are to fall, then surely the burden will fall on the poor taxpayer once again. So, all you NSFAS recipients, be like Nosipho, “pay back the money”. SM.

Politics

Gwede Mantashe has suggested a populist approach to current violence in universities: “close down universities.” But what about stopping services to communities which kill councillors, burn property – and that must start at Vuwane, Inchanga and Langa? What about stopping payment of the salary to a leader who lies in Parliament? What if Mantashe and his ANC leaders go meet students and explain Blade’s good policy than the bizarre populism by Mantashe? Mrs X.

ANC arrogance continues by appointing Hlaudi to an acting post. Woza, elections, woza. We will punish them. Zinhle.

Last Saturday morning we were driving on the N3 North when motorcycle cops came alongside and showed all of us drivers to move over to the slow lane. It was pouring with rain. How lucky of other metros not to have to put up with these self-important politicians. Poor old eThekwini (Dirtbin), we are stuck with the ANC. Zan.

Hairdressers

Hi Gran (BackChat September 22), could you please tell me who your hairdresser is? No one else can do your full colour, highlights, cut etc, for R250.

Hairdressers are charging doctors’ fees now and desperate or stupid peeps are letting them get away with it. Male haircut takes 10 mins, R100. Come on, boycott!

Some hairdressers are a complete rip-off. Thank you. Pensioner.

Nhleko

Police Minister Mr Nhleko, warns: “Must we say this person is a celebrity, so we shall ignore the fundamental clause of equality before the law?”. Heh, heh, heh! Now why does that statement echo ring ones of deja-vu-vu-vu-vu? ese. Whatever Minister of Police Nkosinathi Nhleko says is hot air. This man doesn’t know his right hand from the left hand. And he is placed in charge of the SAPS. He came to JZ’s defence on the Nkandlagate scandal. He had egg splashed on his face by the ConCourt. Now he opens his mouth to say the law enforcement agencies must carry out their duties as stipulated in our country’s constitution. What hogwash! He must have JZ brought to court first, then, and only then, will we believe he is working according to the constitution of our country. Until this happens, whatever he says must be treated as rubbish. Prem.

Municipal

Metro billing. SMS meter reading every month, to no avail. Still getting estimated readings. This department is in a shambles. Sent e-mail, no reply. Phoned, no answer. What are we supposed to do? From July and August 2016, no pensioners rates rebate. Please, somebody help. Patsy, Wentworth.

While we welcome the new WhatsApp line to report water problems in eThekwini, I believe there should be one to report poor road surfaces and potholes in our city. Very often it’s a pain to speak to someone concerning poor roads. SSB.

What a disgrace! eThekwini municipality spending R760 000 on a wealthy businessman’s funeral. This is ratepayers’ money.

R750 000 forked out for the funeral of Zuma’s vocal backers (Don Mkhwanazi), instead of maintaining the Mobeni crematorium.

Odds and ends

Schools. During the apartheid years we also had no sanitary pads, yet we did go to school and prospered. We improvised, that was our attitude. How do you think women in war countries survive? Use your brain just a little. Imagination.

Vodacom Customer Care. Rather disappointing to discover Vodacom have stopped the video calling feature on the Samsung S7. I was shocked to find out Vodacom’s technology is regressing. The video calling feature is excellent to stay in touch with family, especially if one travels for business. I have sent numerous e-mails to Vodacom and it’s most disappointing to note that it doesn’t care to deal with the problem. Veer Anand.

I am the second person to write about the escalators that do not work at the Galleria Mall. The escalators haven’t worked for months. Left message for the mall manager to call. No response to date. T Naidu.

Re: Crime. Maybe Oscar should have also blamed it on alcohol? He would be a free man, too. A precedent for all now. Alcohol, so legal, too. Save our souls. OMG.
