Trump arrives in Bethlehem

-

BETHLEHEM: US President Donald Trump travelled in a high-security convoy to Bethlehem in the Israeli-occupied West Bank today to discuss Middle East peace with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Much of central and southern Jerusalem was shut down to allow the presidential motorcade of around 60 vehicles to make its way from Trump’s hotel to the town, just 8km to the south.

To get to Bethlehem, the location of the Church of the Nativity, where Jesus is said to have been born, Trump passed through an Israeli checkpoint and a network of vast concrete blastwalls that separate the occupied territory from Israel.

The route took the president past the “Walled Off Hotel”, a guesthouse run by the British graffiti artist Banksy that is designed to draw attention to the security infrastructure, which Israel says is there to protect against Palestinian attacks.

On one of the grey concrete walls, the convoy passed a portrait of Leila Khaled, a Palestinian militant who took part in two aircraft hijackings in 1969 and 1970.

Trump is expected to hold around 40 minutes of talks with Abbas, whom he met at the White House earlier this month, before the two issue separate statements. Trump will then travel back to Jerusalem to visit Israel’s Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and deliver a speech at the Israel Museum.

During their White House talks, Trump praised Abbas, and said he looked forward to working with him to pursue peace between Israel and the Palestinians. But he did not mention what has long been the goal of US diplomacy in the region – a two-state solution to the conflict: Israel and a Palestinian state.

Before his visit to the Middle East, the second leg of a nine-day tour that began in Saudi Arabia and will move on to the Vatican, Italy and Belgium, administration officials indicated that Trump may talk about “Palestinian self-determination” in his public comments, a nod towards statehood.

During meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday, Trump focused attention on the threat from Iran but also talked about the opportunities for peace in the region and how Saudi Arabia and other Arab states were shifting their stance, potentially opening a window for a peace agreement.

Palestinian officials say they are ready to resume negotiations with Israel that collapsed in 2014, but the road ahead remains challenging. Abbas is an unpopular leader, according to polls, and the Palestinian political landscape is split between his Fatah party and Hamas, the Islamist movement that is in control in the Gaza Strip and opposes negoti- ations with Israel.

In Gaza, a coastal territory around 60km west of the West Bank that is under a land and sea blockade imposed by Israel and Egypt, demonstrations were expected later today, after protests yesterday, to oppose Trump’s visit to the region.

Trump said yesterday that shared concern about Iran was driving Israel and many Arab states closer, and demanded that Tehran cease military and financial backing of “terrorists and militias”.

In stressing threats from Iran, Trump echoed a theme laid out during weekend meetings in Saudi Arabia with Muslim leaders from around the world, many wary of the Islamic Republic’s growing regional influence and financial muscle.

Trump has vowed to do whatever necessary to broker peace between Israel and the Palestinians, dubbing a peace accord “the ultimate deal”. But ahead of his Holy Land visit, he gave little indication of how he could revive talks that collapsed in 2014.

In the Gaza Strip, dozens of Palestinians rallied against Trump and burned his picture and an effigy of him.
