Durban A DIPLOMATIC crisis is brewing in the tiny gas-rich nation of Qatar before it’s due to host the 2022 Soccer World Cup.
Saudi Arabia leads the band of countries that have cut ties with Qatar on the grounds that it supports terrorist organisations.
The United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Egypt and Yemen have followed the Saudis.
Since controversially being chosen as the host by Fifa in 2010, Qatar has had to brush aside allegations of rigging to host the tournament.
It has been mentioned that one of the stadiums being built will be able to accommodate more people than the inhabitants of the area.
It is anticipated that up to 1.3 million fans will visit Doha in 2022, the majority of them from the Gulf states and Saudi Arabia.
Do I sense a plot at play here? Just a few weeks ago, the US president was hobnobbing and dancing with the princes, sheikhs and kings in Riyadh, and now this.
We must remember that the US was one of the countries that lost the bid to Qatar and is waiting in the wings to carry the ball.
Donald Trump has claimed credit for the isolation of Qatar in a tweet. I wonder what kind of ball game is at play here. KEVIN GOVENDER
