South Africa draw Estonia
THE draw for the 2017 Davis Cup Europe/Africa Zone Group II competition was held at the ITF offices in London yesterday.
South Africa have been seeded 8th in the Euro/Africa Zone Group II and have drawn unseeded Estonia at home in round one. South Africa are ranked 58 on the Davis Cup world rankings, 22 spots ahead of Estonia at 80.
The winner of the tie will play the winner of the Monaco and Slovenia tie in April next year. The loser will play in the Euro/Africa Zone Group II play-offs against the loser of the Monaco vs Slovenia tie also in April.
The seeds for the draw were based on the ITF Davis Cup Nations Ranking of September 19.
The tie will be played from February 3 to 5 at a venue still to be confirmed by Tennis South Africa.
South Africa retained their Europe/Africa Zone Group II status for 2017 by romping past Luxembourg 5-0 in Centurion, Pretoria, at the Irene Country Club to fend off relegation. Estonia were promoted to Group II after winning their Group III competition at home in 2016. – ANA
